INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW AND RETURNING STUDENTS

An Overview of Scheduling

Students at MCHS follow a schedule that is a combination of high school classes (taught by our certified high school teachers), and college (Durham Tech. C.C.) classes.  High school classes consist of core requirements (non-elective classes) only. These are scheduled by MCHS Guidance and Administration.  College classes however, are chosen by the student, in consultation with MCHS Guidance or Administration (for college course descriptions, click here).  The Durham Tech. classes that a student may take depend on results of the placement test (see DTCC Placement Testing).

Important note about placement testing

THE COMPASS EXAM

In order to register for Durham Tech courses, a student must take the COMPASS placement exam.  In order to take the COMPASS, new students must fill out this application form, (if they have not done so already) and return to the MCHS principal, ASAP.  It is needed for a student to receive a DTCC ID #, which is a requirement for taking the COMPASS.

About the COMPASS:
This exam has three sections: reading, writing, and math.  Students should only take the math portion of the exam IF they have completed Algebra II.  All new students (and returning students who wish to retake the exam) must take it no later than July 29.

Click here for everything you need to know about placement testing, including tips on preparing for the test.

Course Selection

Suggestions for Choosing College Courses

Just as a NC high school diploma consists of core requirements, so do curricula for the North Carolina university system.  They total 44 credit hours, and are called the General Education Core, or “Core 44”. Students may complete many of these university core requirements while at MCHS.  In fact, the Core 44 courses should take priority as the student creates a schedule.  Successful completion of a Core 44 course—a “C” or above—qualifies it to be transferred to all colleges and universities in the NC university system, enabling an MCHS alumnus to enroll as a “freshman with advanced standing,” significantly ahead of most incoming freshman with regard to credits.

Getting Started

Step 1:  Take the COMPASS exam, before July 29, as indicated above.  Scores are printed and handed to you as soon as you finish.  You must immediately bring them to Mr. Evans' office (423 Newton Bldg.) to provide MCHS with a copy.  If he's not there, please slide it under the door.

Step 2Click here to download the FALL 2010 Course Schedule. Click here, and look at the “DTCC Plan of Study for Univ. Transfer,” which details the Core 44, and start to think about what courses you would like to register for.
