Middle
College High School is a member of the National Forensic League for
competitive high school debate. And, during the year, our students
participate in National Forensic League competition throughout the
state. Some of the larger tournaments include as many as
twenty-six high schools and often more than five hundred
debate students. Most tournaments are all-day, Saturday events. At
District Championship tournament, a two-day event, debate
students may qualify for National Championship held during the
summer months.
While participating in debate, students have an opportunity to
debate current topics of importance within our world and nation,
using various styles of debate such as Lincoln-Douglas, Policy, Public
Forum, Cross Examination, and Student Congress to name a few. In
addition, students may compete in other special events such as dramatic
interpretation, dramatic duo interpretation, humorous interpretation,
humorous duo interpretation, poetry reading, story-telling,
extemporaneous speaking, and original oratory.
All categories of competition prepare students for their futures by perfecting research and oratory skills.
At tournaments, students earn trophies as well as points toward
higher degrees within the National Forensic League. Students who join
the National Forensic League receive a certificate of
participation/membership. With tournament wins, students may place
emblems on these certificates. Most colleges and universities have
debate teams and are aware of the significance of belonging to the
National Forensic League for high school competitive
debate. Including a National Forensic League certificate
within a college application is very helpful as students compete to get
into the college or university of their choice.
Debate team meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 11:30 AM in room 70-C of the White Building.
Duke University, Wake Forest University, and Cary Academy offer
summer debate institutes this summer for high school students. Please
contact the debate coach at MCHS for additional information.
